Two of Swords
The Two of Swords is a very thought provoking card. It depicts a plainly dressed young woman sitting with a sword held upright in each hand. The swords are crossed in front of her and are held defensively close to her breast. The point of each sword goes just out of view to either side of the card. Behind the woman is the sea and there is an island in the background. It’s night time and the crescent moon is shining. The most striking thing about the Two of Swords is that the woman is blindfolded.
The swords are the cards of the intellect and there is so much going on in the Two of Swords that sometimes it’s difficult to see at first what it might relate to in a reading. First of all the blindfolded woman sees nothing and this may indicate that you are closing your eyes to something important that is happening or is likely to happen. It could be that you have got yourself involved in something but now someone is trying to distract you from finding out exactly what’s going on or that you are distracted by something else. Maybe you are deliberately ignoring something because it’s not what you want to hear. It could also indicate that you have fallen out with someone and now there’s a silence and awkwardness which can’t be broken. The only way forward is to lay down your swords and start talking.
The second thing that I feel is important about the Two of Swords is that the points of the swords are hidden. Could it be that you think you are handling this situation well but in actual fact you are missing the point. Do take care to reassess your position and to go over the facts. You need to make sure that you fully understand everything before you can move on. Sometimes it’s easy to miss a small point that might make all the difference. It’s a bit like reading the small print on an insurance document.
Another major factor in the Two of Swords is the way in which the figure sits very upright but with her back turned to the seascape. The moon is shining and it’s a beautiful evening but she sees nothing and refuses to look at the beauty and tranquillity around her. This would suggest that you might be turning your back on a situation and refusing to feel any emotion. It may not be deliberate on your part but you need to stop what you’re doing for a moment and listen to the people around you. Step outside the immediate situation for a short while and open your eyes. There is goodness and beauty around you and you can get some very interesting ideas by allowing yourself to open up a little. The woman in the Two of Swords looks so defensive. She is not letting anyone near her. It serves as a timely reminder to allow others into your sphere and allow their points of view to come across.
